{"id":4469,"date":"2021-08-27T14:26:29","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T18:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/academics.design.ncsu.edu\/yesand\/?p=4469"},"modified":"2021-08-27T14:26:29","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T18:26:29","slug":"counterculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/academics.design.ncsu.edu\/yesand\/2021\/08\/27\/counterculture\/","title":{"rendered":"Counterculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\nI\u2019m thinking about if counterculture can exist by definition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><strong>coun\u00b7ter\u00b7cul\u00b7ture<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\/\u02c8koun(t)\u0259r\u02cck\u0259lCH\u0259r\/<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s4\">noun<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s3\">a way of life and set of attitudes opposed to or at variance with the prevailing social norm. &#8220;the idealists of the 60s counterculture&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">To have counterculture, we must have a prevailing social norm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Over time, what is considered the \u2018norm\u2019 has fragmented further and further until there is no clear perceived mainstream &#8211; or no common thread between different variants of mainstream. Those who may have considered themselves part of a counterculture inevitably find themselves in the limelight, integrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><strong>cul\u00b7ture<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">\/\u02c8k\u0259lCH\u0259r\/<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s4\">noun<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s3\">the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. &#8220;20th century popular culture&#8221;<br \/>\nthe customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group.&#8221;Caribbean culture<\/span><span class=\"s2\">&#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The definition of culture leaves little room for anything to be \u201ccounter,\u201d instead it\u2019s clarified through use of the term \u201cpopular culture\u201d alluding to the mainstream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Does a counterculture not become yet another culture for a subset of people to respond to and create an opposing counterculture? It\u2019s all very circular and can leave the mind spinning.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4484 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.design.ncsu.edu\/yesand\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/06F2B7FB-DC67-46B6-9779-14EAA9D72ED8.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">On the individual level a culture is just a culture. So what if a group of people collectively prides in contrasting some other culture? It\u2019s still a culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Is either \u2018pro-life\u2019 or \u2018pro-choice\u2019 a counterculture? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">I would argue they are both just a culture, or an aspect of culture by their relation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">It could be said that while nothing is a counterculture, everything is a counterculture.
