N.01 – Spring 2017 Issue – Loud and Clear

Loud and Clear

“Loud and Clear” explores different communication systems and the ways designers can influence those systems, both for the good and the bad.

Digital culture provides infinite methods of communication, so much so that “Do you read me?” should really be “How do you read me?” As designers, we seek to improve the designed systems that surround communication, to respond in a way that is “Loud and Clear,” the theme of this issue of And So.

The systems, methods, and frameworks that surround visual communication generated the inquiries presented in this issue of And So. “Loud and Clear” explores different communication systems and the ways designers can influence those systems, both for the good and the bad. Designed communication can serve as a starting point for conversation, or have unintended consequences that divide individuals and society. The rise of digital communication has challenged designers to instill meaning in digital platforms in ways that improve our ability to communicate and connect.
