Volume 36

Form and Fiction: The role of design and designers in shaping, framing and reflecting reality “The idea of probable, preferable, plausible and possible futures – the space between reality and the impossible – allows designers to challenge design orthodoxy and prevailing technological visions so that fresh perspectives can begin to emerge." —Dunne & Raby Volume 37_Full PDF Abstract In Volume 36 of The Student Publication, we look to engage a discussion on the role of design and designers in shaping, framing, and reflecting reality. While the notion of the designer as a constructor or visionary of a future reality is not a new one, the increasing complexity and connectivity of our world begs for renewed vigor in its evaluation. As more people and entities are engaged with design, the traditional role of the designer as a creator of a single reality is shifting (credit kimberley). Yet one area that distinguishes the designer is our capacity and propensity to envision new futures through fiction. The dialogue...

Volume 36: Marketing Project

In Volume 36, we look to engage a discussion on the role of design and designers in shaping, framing, and reflecting reality. While the notion of the designer as a constructor or visionary of a future reality is not a new one, the increasing complexity and connectivity of our world begs for renewed vigor in its evaluation. As more people and entities are engaged with design, the traditional role of the designer as a creator of a single reality is shifting. Yet one area that distinguishes the designer is our capacity and propensity to envision new futures through fiction. The dialogue between these two ideas is at the core of Form + Fiction.     //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////  ...

Volume 36 Highlighted in DesignLIFE!

Design LIFE, the Publication of the College of Design at North Carolina State, is running an article on Volume 36 of the Student Publication. The article itself explains and outlines the process that the students went through in developing the theme, as well as the amazing Exhibition Party that they held at Studio 704 in Boylan Heights (home of City Fabric.) The Student Publication: Form + Fiction: The role of design and designers in shaping, framing and reflecting reality. Volume 36 of The Student Publication just released the 2012/2013 prospectus, complete with an exhibition launch party. Contributors to Volume 36 include a wide and diverse variety of perspectives on the theme of Form + Fiction. From practicing architects, to current College of Design students, the editors—Anna Bailer and Michael Southard—wanted to create a volume that focused not on a single vision of the future and the role design plays in its development, but on the myriad dialogues and discussions that must emerge from...

In The Beginning: V36 Theme Selection

In The Beginning: V36 Theme Selection

Volume 36 of The Student Publication is underway. This year, a team of students will design and curate the publication under the supervision of Tania Allen through a brand new two-semester course. Already, we’ve chosen an advisory team and picked a theme. The process of theme selection is always one of the most exciting of any publication. For our part, we brainstormed topic ideas that ranged from retro-futurism to global truth, from design simplicity to the perception of reality. Almost all of our ideas focused on an inherent duality, either between past and future or the designer and the world. Through our continued discussion, we realized what was interesting was exactly those dualities and we began to craft a theme that could expand to include many topics that affect our multi-disciplinary audience of designers. The result is the theme for Volume 36: Form + Fiction, which will focus on the role of design and designers in defining, framing and shaping reality. Every...

About the Student Publication

About the Student Publication

The Student Publication began as a tribute to Matthew Nowicki after his untimely death in 1950 at the age of 40. His influence and inspiration as head of the Department of Architecture inspired the students to create The Student Publication in his honor, and so the first issue focused on Nowicki's contributions to the College, the University and the field. Through the process, students realized the potential and importance of such a publication and collection of voices, that they continued the effort, focusing on timely and important issues in the field and inviting some of the most important and influential designers of the day to contribute letters, projects and articles. Such luminaries included Le Corbusier, Mies Van der Rohe, Buckminster Fuller and Richard Saul Wurman. Between 1951 and 1985, 58 issues of the Student Publication were developed. From 1985 - 2000 the Publication took a hiatus, but in 2000 the Publication came back full force with the issue informally known as The...
