It is critical to make backups of your data. No matter how sophisticated your computer is, the possibility of data loss due to fire, theft, hardware failure, etc. is statistically inevitable. While unfortunate, a crashed computer should not slow down anyone with proper backups.
Current Macintosh and Windows operating systems both include backup software. All you need is an external hard drive attached to your computer. Drives are available for $100 or less. This investment is well worth the cost.
Macintosh computers use software called Time Machine. Windows computers use software called Backup. Configuration is available in the System Preferences of Mac OS or in the Control Panels on Windows. Both provide automatic backups as long as the external drive is connected and turned on.

Online solutions such as CrashPlan (http://www.crashplan.com), Carbonite (http://www.carbonite.com) or Mozy (http://mozy.com) are also available for a fee. There are many others. These provide the added benefit of having backups in another location. This could be helpful in the case of theft or fire where your computer is kept. Both are simple to set up and both provide automatic backups whenever your computer is connected to the internet.
NC State has negotiated a discount for CrashPlan. University students, faculty and staff can also save 25 percent on a one-year subscription plan for Code42’s CrashPlan for Home, an online backup solution. Here’s what you need to do:
- Visit the CrashPlan Store.
- Select a plan that works for you.
- Use your @ncsu.edu email address at checkout to receive the 25 percent discount.
Note: If you already have a CrashPlan for Home subscription, you can apply this discount when you renew. See Renewing CrashPlan for Home with an Employer or University Discount.
Please DO NOT rely on using ClassStore and/or Transfer as your Data Backup Plan! For you own protection — Remember these guidelines:
- Do not keep your only copy of a file in Transfer or ClassStore!
- Copy files to your local hard drive while you work!
- Don’t work directly from Transfer or ClassStore!
- Files on Transfer are DELETED each morning at 8:00 a.m.
Once they are deleted, files cannot be recovered. Please use Transfer as the name implies—to transfer files from one computer to another. Please delete files from Transfer when you are finished to make room for other users’ files.
Files on ClassStore are DELETED at the end of each semester or summer session.
Above all, please get into the habit of making current backups!
