I’m thinking about hustle culture in academia and what the college experience really means. Is the ultimate purpose of college exposure? To break the pattern of parental guidance that so many college freshman bring? Or is the point of college to take advantage of time not spent working to achieve great accomplishments?
I think it’s all and none simultaneously. How could we motivate new students without exposing them to success stories? Or how could we encourage individualism and skill specialization without encouraging students independence? Unfortunately, the real point of the college experience could be to fail… but in a safe environment. And from those failures we learn.
