Visual Trumpery: HOW IT LIES!

There was an event in Hunt Library by Alberto Cairo a visual journalist where he talked about “how charts lie and how they can make us smarter”. He titles it “visual trumpery” because the definition of trumpery is something that deceives the eye (just like data does most of the time).

He also started to talk about uncertainty in data (it reminded me of the uncertainty project we did our first semester) and the need for it to be available for people to see instead of hiding it. Data can sometimes be simplified or OVERLY simplified, which is dangerous because when you overly simplify data you’re also distorting it and deceiving people who are looking at it.

Also for anyone interested his slides are all open source so check it out if you’re interested

Here are my notes that I took as well
