Caroline Sinders conducted a workshop with us about Feminist Data Sets. This was by far one of the most eye opening and informative workshops I’ve attended. She introduced the workshop with how computers understand language, following with what data is. The idea in which all data is human output and that we should treat data as precious materials, is something we should consider as we create.
My favorite idea Caroline presented is that we should never view oversights as “bugs” rather as a feature that should be fixed. As innovations are created we should never be ignorant that they can create inequalities, and that artifacts can create biases. It’s up to us to collaborate and figure out how to create intentional unbiased systems for our community. I look forward to seeing Caroline Sinder’s future works, and hope they continue to be an inspiration to me and other designers within our works.
